新入生の皆さん、開智日本橋学園中学校への入学、おめでとうございます。

新入生の保護者の皆さま、このたびはお子様の開智日本橋学園中学校へのご入学、まことにおめでとうございます。また、本日はお忙しいなか、入学式にお運びくださり、まことに有難うございます。お子様の成長された晴れ姿を今日改めてご覧になり、うれしいお気持ちでいっぱいのことと存じます。

「夢宣言」について

さて、新入生の皆さん。さきほど、名前を担任の先生に呼ばれて自分の「夢宣言」をしたとき、どのような気持ちだったでしょうか。経験したことのない、ものものしい雰囲気の中で、この壇に上がって自分の夢について話すのはけっこう大変だったのではないかと思います。「この学校でちゃんとやっていけるのだろうか」と不安になった人もいるかもしれません。

でも、安心してください。皆さんの「夢宣言」をこの壇の上で聞きながら、私は皆さんが「自分さがし」を始めて、大人への第一歩を歩み始めたのだな、と心強く思いました。「自分さがし」ということばは初めて聞いたと思いますが、これについてはこの後で話をします。

みなさんは、これからがんばりたい勉強や部活、将来就きたい仕事、めざしたい人物像など、具体的な夢を話してくれた生徒から、特に夢はないけれどこれからそれを見いだしたいという生徒まで、さまざまでした。それで良いのです。いま、夢がなくても、そのうち見つかりますし、今の夢がこれから変わることも大いにありえます。

ただ、今日の「夢宣言」で語ったことは大切に胸にしまって、ときどき思い返してください。それは、夢がこれからの学校生活に力を与えてくれるものになるからです。夢があることで、みなさんは自分自身を信じ、未来を切り開いて、少しずつ大人になる勇気を得ることができます。夢は希望を与えてくれます。そして、希望は前進するエネルギーを与えてくれます。

私たちの学校には校歌、学校の歌があります。皆さんは、あさってから２泊３日で行われるTBCでこの歌を２年生の先輩たちから習います。この入学式でも後で先輩たちが校歌を歌ってくれるので良く聴いてください。とてもすてきな歌です。その出だしに「夢を探して集う我ら」とあります。今日、皆さんは自分の夢をお互いに語ることによって、「我ら」、つまりこの学校という社会の一員になったのです。改めて、おめでとうございます。

新しい学校生活

さて、みなさんは、今日から新しい環境で学校生活を送ることになります。新しいクラスメートといっしょに授業を受け、さまざまな学校の行事や課外活動をともにすることと思います。少し大人びた先輩たちと部活動や委員会活動でつきあうことにもなるでしょう。

中学校からは授業は教科ごとに先生が変わります。先生方はご自分の得意分野を教えます。ですから、中学校の授業では小学校よりも深く、広く教科を学ぶことになります。今日、机の上で目にした52冊の教科書や参考書を見てびっくりした生徒も多かったと思います。それが「深く、広く学ぶ」ということの現れなのです。

それから、英語のように小学校にはなかった科目もありますし、英語で学ぶ科目もあります。また、この学校には外国籍や外国で長く暮らした先生方もおおぜいいらっしゃいます。最近では、生徒にもお父さまやお母さまが外国からいらっしゃっている場合が珍しくありません。皆さんが英語を学ぶのは、そういった異なる文化背景をもった人たちと分かり合うのに英語が必要だからです。授業で習った英語を使って、外国人の先生にどんどん話しかけてみて下さい。

さまざまな科目の授業を受けていると、自分の得意な科目と不得意な科目が何なのかも分かってくると思います。不得意な科目や、不得意とまで行かなくてもあまり興味を持てない科目があるのは自然なことですので、そのことで自分を責めないでください。よく分からなければ、恥ずかしがらずに先生に質問すればよいのです。先生はきっと答えてくれると思います。その対話が、不得意科目を得意科目にするきっかけになることもあるかもしれません。また、生徒どうしで得意科目を教え合うこともすばらしいことだと思います。

ある先生がこんなことを私に話してくれました。その先生が高校生の時、自分が得意科目だった「生物」を友だちに教えたことがあり、その時、自分が人に教えることが楽しいことに気づいた、そしてそれがきっかけで生物の先生になったのだそうです。このように、得意科目は、大人になってから人生を切り開くきっかけになる場合があります。

「自分さがし」について

さて、最初の方で触れた「自分さがし」について話しましょう。「自分さがし」とは、自分のことを知ることです。「自分のことは分かっているよ」という人もいるかもしれません。でも、大人でも自分のことを分かっている人は意外と少ないものです。この学校ですごす６年のあいだに、皆さんはさまざまな機会で「自分さがし」をして、その答えを見つけてもらいたいと思います。

もう少し具体的に「自分を知ること」について考えてみましょう。ひとつには、それは「自分が好きなことを知ること」ではないか、と思います。さきほど話した得意科目はその一面ですが、それだけでなく、学校では自分の得意分野が何なのかを知る機会がいろいろあります。たとえば、さまざまな行事や課外活動ですが、この学校では生徒たちが自分たちの手でこれを運営しています。先生方は「こうしなさい」と自分の考えをおしつけません。それは、行事や課外活動を生徒が運営することで、自分の好きな分野が何なのか見つけてもらいたいからです。学校ではさまざまな部活動、委員会活動、探究活動などが行われています。そういった活動に積極的に参加して、勉強以外でも自分の好きなことを見つけてください。それがあなたの人生を豊かにします。

「自分さがし」は得意科目や好きな活動をみつけることだけではありません。自分のスタイル、チームの中で果たしたい役割を探すことでもあります。リーダーとしてチームを引っ張るのが得意な人、縁の下の力持ちとしてチームに貢献するのが好きな人、ムードメーカーとしてチームの雰囲気を和やかにしてくれる人、面白いアイディアを出してユニークさを打ち出すのが上手な人、人に分かりやすく説明するのが得意な人、などさまざまな役割があります。学校での活動を通して、自分が生き生きとチームに貢献できる役割を探してください。

同じ船に乗って航海を始めよう

英語のことわざに We are on the same boat. というものがあります。「みんな同じ船に乗っている」ということです。波が穏やかなときでも、時化（しけ）の時でも、私たちは同じ船で助け合いながら、励まし合いながら、海原に乗り出して航海を進める仲間です。今日から新入生の皆さんも「開智日本橋学園」の一員として、先輩たちや先生方といっしょにこの船を盛り上げていってくれるものと期待します。

この学び舎での６年間がすばらしいものとなることをお祈りして、私の挨拶とさせていただきます。ご静聴ありがとうございました。

Principal’s Speech

Ladies and gentlemen, and especially our new students,
welcome to Kaichi Nihonbashi Gakuen Junior High School.
To all the parents and guardians, I offer my heartfelt congratulations on your child’s admission. Thank you very much for taking the time to attend today’s entrance ceremony. I imagine your hearts are filled with joy as you see how much your children have grown.

Your “Dream Declaration”

Now, to our new students.
A short while ago, each of you came up on this stage, had your name called by your homeroom teacher, and made your “Dream Declaration.” How did you feel at that moment?

For many of you, it may have been the first time speaking about your dreams in such a formal atmosphere, in front of so many people. Some of you may have felt nervous or even wondered, “Will I really be able to do well at this school?”

But please don’t worry.
As I listened to your declarations from this stage, I felt strongly that each of you has taken your first step toward adulthood by beginning what I call your “journey of self-discovery.” You may be hearing this phrase for the first time, but I will talk more about it later.

Some of you spoke about specific dreams—subjects you want to work hard in, clubs you want to join, careers you hope to pursue, or the kind of person you want to become. Others said you don’t have a clear dream yet, but hope to find one here.
Both are perfectly fine. Dreams can be discovered along the way, and dreams can change as you grow.

Still, I hope you will keep today’s Dream Declaration close to your heart and look back on it from time to time. Dreams give you strength. They help you believe in yourself, open the door to your future, and give you the courage to grow. Dreams bring hope—and hope gives you the energy to move forward.

Becoming Part of “We”

Our school has a beautiful school song.
During the three-day TBC program starting the day after tomorrow, the second-year students will teach it to you. Later in this ceremony, they will sing it for you, so please listen carefully.

The opening line of the song is:

“We gather in search of our dreams.”

By sharing your dreams with one another today, you have become part of this “we”—a member of the community that is Kaichi Nihonbashi Gakuen.
Once again, congratulations.

A New Learning Environment

From today, you begin your school life in a new environment.

You will take classes with new classmates, participate in various school events and extracurricular activities, and interact with older students who may seem a little more mature.

In junior high school, teachers change depending on the subject. Each teacher teaches the field they specialize in. This means that your learning will be deeper and broader than in elementary school.

Many of you were probably surprised to see the 52 textbooks and reference books on your desks today. That is a sign of the rich and wide-ranging learning that awaits you.

There are also subjects you did not study in elementary school, such as English, and even subjects taught in English. Many of our teachers have lived abroad, including myself, or come from other countries. Increasingly, some of our students also come from families with international backgrounds.

You study English because it is essential for understanding people from different cultures.
Please try using the English you learn—don’t hesitate to speak to our teachers from overseas.

Discovering Your Strengths

As you take various classes, you will begin to notice which subjects you are good at and which you find difficult. Having weaker subjects—or subjects you simply don’t enjoy as much—is completely natural.
Please don’t blame yourself for that.

If you don’t understand something, don’t be shy—ask your teacher. They will gladly help you. That conversation might even turn a weak subject into a strong one. Teaching and learning from your classmates is also a wonderful way to grow.

One of our teachers once told me that when he was in high school, he taught biology—his favorite subject—to a friend. Through that experience, he discovered how enjoyable it was to teach others, and that eventually led him to become a biology teacher.
In this way, your strengths can become the starting point for your future.

What “Self-Discovery” Really Means

Now, let me return to the idea of “self-discovery.”

Self-discovery means getting to know yourself.
Some of you may think, “I already know myself,” but even adults often don’t fully understand who they are. Over the six years you spend at this school, I hope you will have many opportunities to explore who you are and find your own answers.

One part of knowing yourself is discovering what you like.
Your favorite subjects are one clue, but there are many others. At this school, students take the lead in running events and extracurricular activities. Teachers do not simply tell you what to do. By taking responsibility yourselves, you can discover what you enjoy and what you are good at.

We have many clubs, committees, and inquiry-based activities.
Please participate actively and find things you love outside of academics as well. These discoveries will enrich your life.

Self-discovery is not only about finding your favorite subjects or activities.
It is also about finding your style—your role within a team.

Some people are natural leaders.
Some support the team quietly from behind the scenes.
Some brighten the atmosphere as mood-makers.
Some contribute unique ideas.
Some explain things clearly to others.

All of these roles are valuable.
Through your school activities, I hope you will find the role in which you can shine.

Sailing Together

There is an English saying:
“We are on the same boat.”

Whether the sea is calm or stormy, we help and encourage one another as we sail forward together.
From today, you too are members of the ship called Kaichi Nihonbashi Gakuen. I look forward to seeing you work together with your seniors and teachers to make this ship even stronger.

I sincerely hope that the six years you spend at this school will be truly wonderful.
