For the past several years we have incorporated the Oxford Big Read Competition into our curriculum. It is a contest in which students read an Oxford Graded Reader book and make a poster about it that summarizes the book and gives a recommendation. It started out as a simple project to motivate students to read more as well as getting them to use their creativity and work on their English writing skills. But now it has become an integral part of our curriculum as an interdisciplinary unit in which the art department works with the English department to develop various abilities and support students to create highly-skilled projects.

We have received a couple of honorable mentions in the past, but I am happy to announce that this year is the first time that one of our students has won the contest. Akari Hosoe from class 1年1組 created a wonderful poster that was chosen for the top prize in the competition. She received a trophy, certificate, a dictionary, and a year’s subscription to the Oxford digital library. Because of her great work, our school also received a set of Oxford Grade Reader books, and we will be adding those to our current library for all students to use.

We hope that Akari’s achievement will inspire other students and we will continue to support and motivate students to enter competitions and do activities that give them real world experiences.

過去数年間、私たちはOxford Big Read Competitionをカリキュラムの一部として取り入れてきました。このコンテストでは、生徒がオックスフォードのグレーデッドリーダーの本を読み、その内容をまとめ、おすすめポイントを紹介するポスターを作成します。もともとは、生徒にもっと読書をしてもらい、創造力を活かしながら英語のライティングスキルを伸ばすためのシンプルなプロジェクトとして始まりました。しかし今では、美術科と英語科が協力し、さまざまな能力を育成する学際的な学習活動として、カリキュラムの重要な一部となっています。

これまでにも何度か特別賞を受賞しましたが、今年初めて優勝者が出ました！ 1年1組の細江あかりさんが素晴らしいポスターを作成し、見事最優秀賞を受賞しました。彼女にはトロフィー、賞状、辞書、そしてオックスフォードのデジタルライブラリー1年分の利用権が贈られました。さらに、細江さんの素晴らしい作品のおかげで、学校にもオックスフォードのグレーデッドリーダーの本が寄贈されることになり、これらを図書館に追加し、すべての生徒が利用できるようにします。

細江さんの受賞が、他の生徒たちの刺激となることを願っています。これからも、生徒たちがコンテストに挑戦し、実践的な経験を積めるよう、積極的にサポートしていきます。
